Pompano Beach Club
Feel The Love
By Donna Rangel

Visitors to Bermuda can attest that there is a reason it has won Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Island in the Caribbean/Atlantic region 15 times since 1994 (most recently in 2009). With its rich history, diverse cultures, friendly people and exceptional beauty you realize the moment you arrive here that Bermuda is someplace special. Splendidly secluded and utterly unique, yet just a short flight from the U.S, Bermuda offers a great depth of experiences. With no neon signs, limited cars, and strict environmental laws, its ambiance has a purity rarely found anywhere in the world.

Rich in botanical beauty and British charm, this 21-square mile island offers honeymooners easy access (it’s less than two hours by air from major East Coast airports), turquoise waters and smooth pink sand beaches. Yes, the sand really is pink thanks to millions of tiny Foraminifer shells washed up from the reef.

Those looking for a magnificent oceanfront setting with a high level of personal service need not look any further than the Pompano Beach Club. Dramatically situated overlooking Bermuda’s Southwest Coast in Southampton Parish, the resort’s location is considered one of the best beachfront settings on the island, offering breathtaking ocean views from every part of the property. Since the resort is tucked away from the island’s main road, you’ll feel as though you’ve escaped to a private, secluded hideaway – yet, you are only minutes away from the best that Bermuda has to offer. Most of the island’s popular south shore beaches (Horseshoe Bay, Warwick Long Bay and Church Bay) are a mere ten-minute ride from the resort.

Opened in 1956, this hotel was the first fishing club on the island. Today, the property is owned and operated by the Lamb family, whose goal is to provide guests with a luxurious and personal experience in an atmosphere of casual elegance, dissimilar to a generic resort-complex offering.

Pompano has its own private beach, with plenty of chaise lounges, sand chairs and beach umbrellas. Or if you’re looking for something a little more active, the resort offers many water sports on-site like sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing or shoreline fishing. At low tide you can wade out over 400 yards in knee- to chest-deep water, along the resort’s spectacular sandbar. The shallow sandbar is the only one of its kind in Bermuda, attracting beachgoers, snorkelers, water sports enthusiasts and swimmers of all ages. So put on your mask, fins and snorkel and explore the brilliant coral reefs, which line the edge of the shallow sandbar or grab a “noodle” or air mattress and float effortlessly while basking in the warm Bermuda sunshine.

The resort’s heated oceanfront swimming pool overlooks their spectacular waterfront. The bright white balustrade railing set against the different shades of blue found in the ocean and sky creates a sensational setting, with a bit of Mediterranean feel. Pompano’s pools and Jacuzzis are open 24 hours a day. Food and beverage service from the adjacent Pool Bar and Coral Reef Café is available daily.

The Pompano Beach club has the perfect location to allow guests to easily experience what Bermuda is all about. Scuba diving, jet skiing, water skiing and Boston Whaler powerboat rentals are available at Robinson’s Marina – located only a five-minute ride from the resort. The intriguing Royal Naval Dockyard, a 75-acre historical structure, located at the island’s most northwestern point, is 15 minutes away and offers numerous sightseeing attractions (such as the Bermuda craft market, glassblowing factory, rum cake shop and Bermuda’s Maritime Museum – where the popular “Dolphin Quest” operation is set up). Fort Scaur and Gibbs Hill Lighthouse are two nearby attractions that enable visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the island.

Golfers love the fact that the resort is right next to Port Royal, the island’s top-rated public golf course (with the first tee only a 500-yard walk away) and only a ten to fifteen minute drive to three more quality golf courses. Ranked among the world’s best public golf courses by Golf Digest and named Bermuda’s finest course by the New York Times, Port Royal features 18 championship holes over 6,842 manicured yards, the longest and most picturesque course in all of Bermuda. Designed by world-renowned architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1970, Port Royal has recently undergone a $14.5 million renovation in preparation for the 2009/2010 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Add to that its 300-yard oceanfront driving range and your Port Royal experience is sure to be unforgettable.

Maybe your idea of a relaxing vacation includes some activities a little less active than snorkeling and golfing. Not to worry, the Pompano Beach Club’s Serenity Spa is located on the first floor of the resort’s main clubhouse. Offering a wide variety of massage and body treatments the spa also overlooks the waterfront and features treatment rooms with oceanfront views. Services include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, couples treatments and special spa packages, allowing you to indulge your senses and rejuvenate your mind and body.

Pompano’s spacious guestrooms, with endless ocean views, are located in a series of small villas clustered in one and two-story pink buildings overlooking the Atlantic. The rooms at this world-class resort have tropical décor, rattan furniture, king-sized beds, a mini-refrigerator, bathrobes, coffee maker, a mini safe, Internet access and more. All rooms feature a private balcony or patio and receive twice per day maid service.

During your stay at Pompano Beach Club you have three restaurants to choose from on the property. Located adjacent to the Pool Bar, the Coral Reef Café is the ideal place to enjoy afternoon snacks or alfresco lunches overlooking the resort’s scenic waterfront. Their bistro-style restaurant, Ocean Grill, has an ocean view with floor to ceiling windows on three sides making it one of the most dramatic dining spots on the island. And the Cedar Room Restaurant has received many accolades for both the high quality cuisine it consistently serves as well as its superb oceanfront location.

Bermuda is the perfect place for a honeymoon with its rich romantic history, unparalleled sophistication and backdrops of breathtaking views. One step on their shores and you’ll understand why “Feel the Love” is the island’s slogan.
